Inspiring Women CEOs: Lindsey McCoy and Alison Webster

Called the “Netflix of shampoos,” Plaine Products is a rapidly growing company with the goal of making a significant environmental impact.

As a co-founder with her sister Alison Webster, Lindsey McCoy (formerly Delaeasy) is finding ways to address one of the major environmental problems of our time. Drive on any road, walk on any beach and you will see the consequences of our disposable lifestyle. Plastic is everywhere.

Sustainability is a primary motivator at Plaine Products, a hair and body care company with a twist. Lindsey and Alison have personally tested and approved all products to ensure they are environmentally friendly: biodegradable, free of parabens, sulfates and toxins with all organic and vegan ingredients.

This is where they have seized the opportunity to further innovate for environmental change: the packaging can be sent to them for refilling at no additional charge. You can also recycle the containers (100%), which are aluminum.

“Every single piece of plastic that’s ever been made still exists,” says Lindsey. “It’s inherently designed to last for hundreds or thousands of years.” You’ve heard of plastic islands floating in the oceans. We are flooding the world with single-use plastic. Plaine Products offers an alternative, something families and people like you can do at home to make an environmental change.

Lindsey lived for 10 years in the Bahamas running an environmental nonprofit organization and saw the problem firsthand, with plastic on the beach, in the ocean, and on the road. She realized just by looking around her bathroom how much plastic she had and started talking to her sister about how to change that.

The environmental impact commitment of these CEOs is real: Plaine Products is a Certified B Corporation. Lindsey and Alison have chosen to introduce the mission lock into their corporate governance documents, a way to preserve the company’s environmental impact focus during high growth and when attracting investors. All Plaine products are natural, high quality, and chemical free.

In just two years since its launch, they are on track to surpass $1 million in sales and receive more than 100,000 plastic bottles from landfills. The company has over 1,000 subscribers and has run a Kickstarter campaign, as well as increasing wholesale and online sales.

One of the reasons I think this company works is that they are building a community around the brand. They ask you to be an ambassador, spreading the word face to face and through social media. They’ve also had considerable coverage from beauty bloggers – Lindsey says they couldn’t have built the company without her input.

Lindsey McCoy and Alison Delaplaine are examples of women CEOs who saw a problem and built a company to solve it in innovative ways. Even small businesses can start making a significant difference, making an impact, and as your business grows, your impact will grow.
