Arrow Cresting – What is it and why is it done?

Why do you need to crown your arrows?

There are two main reasons why people place their arrows: to mark the different arrows in their collection and to add an aesthetic touch to them as well.

First, the crest of an arrow makes it easy to differentiate between certain arrows. Experienced archers will be able to tell the difference between different types of arrows, but they will only be able to do so when they spend time and effort closely scrutinizing the arrow. Bright colors and distinctive markings will make the task much easier, which is always good for you. Spending a little extra time crowning your arrows will pay off, especially when you’re hunting and have little time to choose your arrows one by one.

And the other reason people crown their arrows is because it makes them look so cool. Crested arrows are an art form unto themselves, and are a great outlet for the avid archer to unleash his artistic side. With a host of materials and colors at your disposal, it will be easy to create your own unique patterns.

How do you crown arrows?

There are many ways the arrow crest can be done, from arrow wraps to stencils and simple old brush work.

However, a common factor is the use of a ridge making machine. These machines are basically designed to hold an arrow firmly while constantly turning it. Simply wet a small brush with paint, attach the tip to a part of the rotating arrow shaft, and press lightly. The constant rotation of the arrow will allow you to evenly cover the axis of the arrow with paint, making the job relatively easy and quite fun.

Of course, this is only the most basic method of crowning an arrow. You can use a wrap around the axis of an arrow, allowing you to quickly slap bold and unique designs, or you can wrap a template around the axis of the arrow before rotating it on the ridge making machine. The latest ridge shape will allow you to paint intricate patterns on the arrow to give it even more life.

A word of caution

If you are taking your arrows hunting or participating in archery tournaments, be careful with the crest of your arrows.

First of all, certain patterns can attract the attention of the game you are hunting. This is especially true if you are hunting animals that are particularly nervous, such as mule deer. On the other hand, the very structure of the arrow can be affected by a poor crest. The weight and aerodynamic properties of the arrow could be altered, especially if the wood absorbed too much paint.

Nonetheless, the arrow crest is an essential step in adding character to your arrows. Learn to do it right and you will have a set of arrows for you.
