Whales are the largest mammals and are classified as cetaceans. They are further divided into two groups based on whether they have a set of teeth (odontoceti) or no teeth (mysticeti).

Types of whales

blue whales

The blue whale is the type of whale most familiar to many people, as it often represents the largest mammal in the world. It can grow up to 108 feet and can reach a weight of over 172 metric tons. A blue whale has a long, thin body. The color of the dorsal area varies in shades of bluish gray and a lighter shade below the body.

killer whales

An orca whale is better known as the killer whale. It is a very violent type of whale but does not pose a threat to humans. An orca whale that reaches adulthood can grow up to 105 feet and can reach a weight of almost 200 metric tons. An orca whale has a black back and white sides and chest. Their eyes have white spots behind and above. A baby whale has a yellowish color to its skin. This later fades and turns white as the whale matures. This type of whale is the largest of the dolphin family.

Humpback whales

The humpback or baleen whale that reaches adulthood can grow up to 50 feet and can reach a weight of 36,000 kilograms. Its significant features are the unique body shape, elongated pectoral fins, and a knobby head. A humpback whale loves to show off its acrobatic talents, such as slapping and breaking water.

Beluga whale

A beluga or white whale that reaches adulthood can grow up to 15 feet and can reach a weight of up to 1,600 kilograms for males and up to 1,200 for females. A newborn beluga whale has brown or gray skin. This color fades to a whitish gray or white as the whale matures. This type of whale has a greasy, oily bump in the center of its forehead.

A sperm whale has the largest tooth of any mammal on earth. It is called a sperm whale because of the white, waxy substance it excretes on its head. He was mistaken in thinking that the substance was the sperm of the whale. Although everyone knows that they are not sperm, the name remains. An adult whale can grow up to 67 feet and can weigh up to 57,000 kilograms.

Vast oceans have whales living in them. Whales are commonly seen in the Antarctic and Arctic oceans as they are attracted to cold, deep waters. The movement of whales is directly affected by the migration of their prey such as fish and other animals and the movement of ice.
