Not many of us wrestling fans know how it all started. The story goes back to 1925, when WWE’s grandfather Roderick McMahon started promoting some boxing matches in New York City. The birthday of modern wrestling can be considered the day two people met: Roderick McMahon and Josef Mondt. They founded the CWC (Capitol Wrestling Corporation), the corporation that will evolve WWE into modern days.

The next step is taken in 1953, when the CWC joined the National Wrestling Alliance, bringing the business to a more legitimate level. Also in 1953, McMahon’s son Vincent took over for his father, beginning the tradition of a McMahon running the company. In 1956, the CWC began broadcasting wrestling matches.

1963 can be considered the birth year of the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF). The story is simple: CWC wrestler Buddy Rogers has won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Under CWC rules, he had to defend his title by paying $25,000. Buddy chose to defend the title and lost the fight and the title. The CWC head was upset and he decided to leave the NWA.

In the late 1960s, Mondt decided to retire and Vincent McMahon became the sole director of the WWWF. At the same time, McMahon was on the NWA board of directors and organized several matches between the NWA Champions and the WWWF. Most of them ended in a way that no real winner was determined.

30 years ago, in 1979, the WWWF became WWF – World Wrestling Federation, and changed ownership to Vincent J. McMahon. In 1982, ownership passed to his son, Vincent K. McMahon, who began expanding the WWF.

Vincent K. McMahon was the first McMahon to begin selling WWF television shows to television stations and on VHS tapes throughout the US and abroad. He was the one who hired Hulk Hogan, a wrestling and movie star from the 80s. That worked very well for the WWF promotion, which became popular all over the world.

So, he was Vincent K. McMahon, who redefined both: sports and entertainment, and can be considered the father of WWE.
