Having well-placed contacts in the dance industry can help you in your dance career. In fact, it may even mean that you will never be out of a job in the dance industry. Can you succeed without contacts in today’s dance industry?

Fortunately, the answer is yes. Although having some strong connections can definitely make things easier than they can be, choreographers are always looking for new talent and new dancers to work with.

There are enough jobs in the dance industry that even people with no contacts in the industry can make a successful career if they have enough talent. If not, you would only see the same faces in all music videos.

With that said, a dancer should look to make new contacts as they move forward in the dance industry. Making new friends can often have positive consequences, especially if those friends are well connected and like the way you dance.

Think about it. What would you rather do? Auditioning in a room with 200 other dancers or getting work on a plate from a friend who knows you can pick up their choreography style on top of your head? I know what the easiest job is!

Of course, it is a feedback loop, because the more successes you have in the auditions, the more contacts you will have. All of this means more dance jobs for you.

Although having good connections may mean that you can land some jobs very easily, this is of course not always the case. There are many jobs where you can only get the job through an audition. There are many occasions when the decision makers have nothing to do with the dance industry, it could be a representative of a record label, for example.

Networking isn’t just about making friends and talking when you meet, you want to exchange numbers too. This makes it easy for the person to contact you if they need dancers for a job. Just as an agency can’t tell you about an audition or casting unless they know how to contact you, many dancers won’t tell you about a job if they can’t figure out how to call you.

Although people sometimes like to leave their phones at home for a few days, if you are contacted regularly for auditions or if you are with an agency, you should always have your cell phone handy. Many jobs and castings arrive on short notice.

You can make contacts wherever you are dancing. And don’t just think where there are other dancers, you might run into a famous choreographer while dancing in a club as well.
