In 2008, the Dermatology Certification Nursing Board (DCNP) introduced an examination that validates competency in knowledge and clinical practice in dermatology. This examination remains the only formal recognition of NP knowledge competency in dermatology.
Dermatology CEUS For Nurse Practitioners
The certification process for dermatology NPs is much the same as the certification process for physicians. A bachelor’s degree requires approximately three years of education. A two-year program for advanced training can last from 18 months to five years. Nurse practitioners can complete the process while working full-time, but it can take longer if they are working part-time. The certification process can take five to eight years. A graduate with a Master’s degree can earn a certificate in dermatology in as little as two years.
To become a certified dermatology NP, you must have at least 3,000 hours of recent clinical experience and pass a written examination. The DCNP exam is composed of three components: teaching and prescribing interventions, professional activities, and knowledge of ten types of conditions. Twenty percent of the exam will be focused on the neoplasms, whereas the remaining twenty percent is on the scale of scales and papulosquamous dermatoses.
The training requirements for a certified dermatology NP include working in a clinical dermatology practice at least twenty hours per week. NPs who participate in the study must also be board-certified in dermatology and must practice in a collaborative practice with at least one dermatologist. However, NPs who practice more than 50 percent aesthetics or cosmetic dermatology were excluded from the study. In addition, the study focused on general dermatology.
