Basic principles for finding winners in races

Rooting for winners in horse racing doesn’t have to be a laborious exercise, especially with the internet making it much easier to research the form than it used to be. With a single click on the horse’s name, the horse’s career history will appear on any of the major racing sites. It is here that you will find horses that are well positioned to win compared to their recent starts. They may have dropped in grade or have less weight than recent starts, or whatever. You can access this information in seconds. Here, instead of telling you what to do, I’ll tell you that I selected and endorsed some of the winners as examples.

Ruby Row was a horse I first endorsed after a stint at Riccarton in March. He signed up for a 10k race, which is the first time he’s signed up for a race under 20k. As a previous winner of courses and distances and with an excellent record after coming out of unemployment, I supported her and she won by paying $6

He then ran against better company in his next three or four races, but by May he was racing in a midweek event at Ashburton. I bet him again and he won by paying $13

At Royal Ascot I supported Coronet in one of the Group Three races. She had finished unranked in both of her starts during the current season in the Group One company, but she was undefeated in two starts as a two-year-old. In other words, she had never been beaten in races below group one. Coronet duly won on September 1

In July, a well-priced winner that I supported was Whatwedo in Wanganui. He had finished down the track at Hastings just five days earlier. That race was 1,400 meters and now he was back at his favorite distance of 1,200 meters. He was also competing on his favorite course this time where he had won twice before. His past record at Hastings, where he last raced, was poor. Whatwedo won by paying $13.50 but I got early odds of 25/1 on him.

A promising horse in winning form is always a good bet and one such winner I backed was Rawmaterial at Riccarton. He had won three of eight starts, won his most recent race and was carrying no more weight than his last race. I supported him and he won 8/1. There are many such horses like this that win and they are not hard to spot.
